Las Vegas is a city of bright lights and lots of gambling. In fact, it is known as many things, including “Sin City”, “Lost Wages”, and “The City Of Opportunity”, depending on who you talk to.
The Mob
It wasn’t until the 1930s to 1940s that casinos began to come to town. Believe it or not, a lot of that was because of the mob. Gangsters in the east, especially in New York, were being forced out by the prohibition era crack down on illegal gaming, you see.
So, the only thing for gangsters and mob bosses to do was to move their illegal operations. Many of them, like Bugsy Siegel, moved west, to what is now the booming gambling center of Las Vegas.
Stars Popularize Vegas
Over the next several years, the word spread quickly about Las Vegas, thanks in large part to celebrities. Stars like Frank Sinatra started the ball rolling. Then, much later, came stars like Liberace. In fact, there’s even a Liberace Museum in Las Vegas.
Of course, popularity leads to growth and development. The result of which is the fact that these days you can find in Las Vegas more hotel casinos than ever. Not only that, but they are much much bigger than ever before, in most cases. The hotel quality has only improved with time. There are so many conveniences and amenities, in fact, that most visitors never want to leave.
The really nice thing about the hotels in Las Vegas is that they aren’t likely to ever go out of business. For the most part, people will always want a good time and want to go to Las Vegas to find it. That’s why Las Vegas has managed to avoid the economic problems that are currently having a major impact on other parts of the United States.
